First calf of the year

Wednesday morning i went out to check cows, when i got there i seen that 4T had her water bag hanging there. So I called my boss to tell him that i was going to be a little late while i stayed to make sure she had the calf alright. My boss didnt answer so i called a lady i work with to tell her what was going on and she said it would be alright so she came and got some supplies that I had for work. When i got back from taking the supplies to her the feet were starting to droop a little so i decided it was time that i go ahead and pull the calf. I got her into the catchpen and got all of the stuff ready to pull it. I got the feet chained and went in and the nose of the head was caught on the top of her opening so i had to pull that down and get the head out. After that it was a pretty easy pull. It ended up being a heifer calf. She ended up weighing about 78 lbs. So we are started calving one down 5 more of ours to go. Amanda's dad has about 17 to calve and we will have to take care of them too, and my sister and her husband are bringing over either 3 or 5 for us to calve out. So i/we will be busy til may.

Well so much for keeping up with last years calf crop. We ended up having three bulls and one heifer. We banded R01's bull calf and made him a steer and sold him. 3T's calf was a bull and we were going to keep him but he didn't grow like we wanted him to so we ended up cutting him and selling him also. That leaves us with willow W02 and wall-e W01. We are going to start trying to AI willow around the middle of March for a Jan. 1st baby. Wall-e will be consigned to Dr. Randy Schawang's production sale this year on the 20th of March in David City.

We went down to the Kansas/NE Pick of the herds/Fall female Festival after thanksgiving and bought a couple bred cows from Andy Ledoux they are due around the 8th and 10th of Feb. as for our cows, 4t is due on the 5th of Feb. 3T due on March 1st R01 May 1st and 7T the 20th of May.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Meet Willow aka W02

Meet little Willow, known as W02 in the record books. Willow was born Febuary 6th, 2009 unassisted. Daughter of 7T and Top Secret (sire of Thunderstruck, bull sold March 2008 on Schawang Cattle Sale in David City, Nebraska, for $1800.00)

Willow is quite the cuttie, and is full of spunk and spark. She enjoys long walks in the corn stalks along her cousin Wall-e aka W01.

Just a fun picture I took of 7T while we were waiting ever so paitenly for her to calve! Or shall I say Joel was going out every night to check her in the middle of the night. Go figure though the one night he decided not to check she'd calved about 1:30am. At least he was lucky enough to find a healthy babe in the morning when he checked before work.
